Presentation Title: Clinical Insights About the Evolution and Long-term Stability of Root Coverage Procedures

Synopsis:
For decades, the use of periodontal soft tissue root coverage procedures for the treatment of single and multiple recession-type defects has been generating much debate. Different surgical techniques and flap designs had been described and used to reduce recession depth and clinical attachment level, as well as increase the width of keratinized tissue (KT) band (when indicated). Regarding to the importance of KT, it has long been suggested that a minimum 2 mm band of KT (with at least 1 mm of attached tissue) appears to be required to preserve the health of periodontal tissues. Based on these premisses, this lecture will focus on the following issues:

1 - The impact of flap preparation and surgical devices on the improvements of root coverage outcomes during the last three decades
2 - The current indications of soft tissue grafts
3 - The importance of the keratinized tissue band on the long-term (> 5 years) stability of the gingival margin and prevention of gingival recession relapse
